Men's Swim & Dive Coasts Past Roberts Wesleyan

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomores Lucas Miller and Troy Luley both won three events and had second-place finishes as the Union College men's swimming & diving team defeated Roberts Wesleyan University 181-101 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym Pool.

Senior Cole Pierson added to the dominant victory for his squad by winning both diving events, and first-year Samuel Staudinger found the podium in all four of his events as well.

Miller started the day off with a 10:39.35 performance in the 1,000 freestyle, recording an early season-best for himself. He also won the 200 butterfly (2:06.69) and the 500 free (5:09.89).

Luley's first individual win came in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.68), then he also won the 200 breast (2:15.87) and the 200 individual medley (2:06.24).

Union took the top-three spots in the 200 fly, with first-year Mathys Chevrier notching a lifetime-best in second place (2:22.38). Junior Rob Shontz placed third in the event led by Miller.

Staudinger took almost a full two seconds off his season-best 50-free time, placing second with a 22.17 and only .05 seconds behind Roberts Wesleyan's Ethan Brodman in first. Staudinger also won the 100 free (48.99) and placed second in the 500 free (5:12.34). Sophomore Chase Reynolds placed fourth in the 100 free with a lifetime-best 52.57.

First-year Cole Scafidi won the 100 fly (57.83), and Staudinger, Miller, junior Nick Megas, and sophomore Tripp Kennedy combined for a 1:31.50 mark in the 200 free relay and a second-place finish with the meet already solidly in hand for the Garnet Chargers.

Union won its second consecutive meet against Roberts Wesleyan and also scored its most points in a meet against the Redhawks.

The Garnet Chargers will compete in an intersquad meet on Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. on Homecoming and Family Weekend.
