UConn Scores Three Second Period Goals to Beat Union 4-2 in Home Opener

SCHENECTADY, NY - Connecticut scored three second period goals including two in the span of 16 seconds to hand Union a 4-2 defeat in the Dutchwomen's home opener. The loss drops the "U" to 0-3-0 on the season while the Huskies improve to 1-2-1. This marks the first time since the 2010-11 season that the Dutchwomen have lost their home opener, snapping a string of three consecutive victories on opening night. Jessica Kaminsky and Kathryn Tomaselli recorded the goals for Union.

Shenae Lundberg posted 40 saves for the second time this season and eclipsed the 2,000-plateau in her career. She now stands at 2,019, 243 shy of of Lundy Day's all-time mark of 2,262.

Less than two minutes after Union failed to convert on the power play, UConn was able to strike for the game's first goal with 4:22 left to go in the opening period. Rebecca Fleming fired a shot that was saved, with the rebound skipping to Lindsay Roethke for another bid. The shot deflected across the crease, and Kelly Harris was there waiting to poke it home and put the Huskies up 1-0. UConn finished the first period with a 21-4 shots advantage but thanks to Lundberg's 20 saves, the score remained 1-0.

At the 2:01 mark of the second period, the Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal. Leah Lum and Harris circled the puck to Emily Snodgrass who was waiting right near the goal to knock it in with a backhanded shot.

UConn picked up two more goals in the frame, finding the back of the cage in a span of 16 seconds. Kayla Campero scored off assists from Rachel Farrel and Snodgrass to make it 3-0. At 11:33, Sarah MacDonnell took a feed from Lexi Lersch and was able able to snipe it home over the shoulder of Lundberg to give UConn the four goal edge.

Union found the score column at the 9:18 mark of the third after a series of penalties led to a brief period of a 4-on-3 advantage for the Dutchwomen, which the Garnet and White used to their advantage. After a shot was blocked in front off the stick of Kathryn Davis, Jessica Kaminsky gathered the loose puck and buried it past the UConn netminder to cut the deficit to 4-1.

With just over minutes remaining in regulation, Tomaselli rifled home a close range shot off the feeds from Kaminsky and Davis to slice the UConn lead to 4-2. Davis had a chance to pull the Dutchwomen within one with less than two minutes to go but her shot drilled the post and the Huskies cleared the puck to seal the victory.

These two will meet again tomorrow afternoon inside Messa Rink with the puck scheduled to drop at 3:00 PM.
