PRINCETON, NJ - Haley Welch scored the extra attacker goal from inside the left circle with 34 seconds remaining in the third period to help the Dutchwomen erase a 2-0 deficit and force overtime with Princeton on Friday night. However, Molly Contini scored the game-winner for the Tigers with 2:13 remaining in overtime to defeat Union 3-2. Senior goalie
Shenae Lundberg made 34 stops in the contest, becoming the all-time saves leader in program history.
Just over one minute into the first period, Princeton's Contini got off a good look from just outside the crease but Lundberg made a great save with her chest. The stop gave her 2,263 career saves, one more than Lundy Day and moved her into sole possession all-time in Union history.
The Tigers would take the lead 7:35 minutes into the contest on the goal by Jaimie McDonell. Contini and Ali Pankowski picked up the assists for Princeton.
PU would increase their lead to 2-0 just over three minutes later as Kelsey Koelzer found the back of the net off the feeds from Cristin Shanahan and Kiersten Falck at the nine minute mark in the opening stanza.
Union got one back though just under two minutes into the second period off the athletic goal from
Christine Valente. The senior captain potted her second of the season as she was falling down but was able to knock in the back-handed shot from her knees to cut the deficit to 2-1. The goal was set up as
Nicole Russell's shot from point blank was saved but Valente was there to make the diving stab and net the rebound.
Trailing 2-1 with 1:20 to play, the Dutchwomen (1-9-2, 0-3-0) pulled Lundberg for the extra skater. Welch was able to drill home the game-tying goal through the crowd in front of the net with just 34 seconds remaining on the clock to erase the two-goal Princeton lead and force overtime.
With 2:13 to go in the extra period, Contini was able to redirect a shot past Lundberg to give the Tigers (5-1-1, 3-0-0) the 3-2 victory over the Dutchwomen.
Union will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to #5-Quinnipiac. The puck is scheduled to drop at 4:00 pm.
