Union Rallies to Defeat Notre Dame, 3-2, at Shillelagh Tournament

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Trailing by two goals in the third period, Union rallied for a 3-2 overtime win over Notre Dame at the fifth annual Shillelagh Tournament, played in front of a sellout crowd of 5,022 at the Compton Family Ice Arena.  Union will face Western Michigan (which defeated Ohio State earlier in the day) in the championship game of the Shillelagh Tournament Saturday at 4:05 p.m.  Union has won its last 11 games against Hockey East opponents dating to December 2012.

Junior Matt Wilkins forced overtime with 1:45 left in regulation with a power play goal, then scored the overtime game-winner with 22 seconds left on the clock, blasting a shot from the slot off a pass from Sebastien Gingras, who also assisted on the tying goal.  Union did not allow any shots on goal in the overtime period, killing off a Notre Dame power play attempt in the process.

After being held scoreless for 48 minutes, Spencer Foo started the comeback with his team-leading seventh goal of the season, a wrister from the left faceoff dot at the 8:04 mark of the third period.  The 17th-ranked Dutchmen finished with a 38-27 shot advantage.

Notre Dame built a 2-0 lead on goals from Sam Herr and Austin Wuthrich.  Herr scored on a backhander at 7:34 of the first period while Austin Wuthrich deflected a slapshot taken by Luke Ripley at 14:31 of the second period.

Friday's contest marked Union's first meeting against Notre Dame since January 2009, when the Dutchmen lost to the then-No. 1 ranked Irish at the inaugural Shillelagh tourney.
