SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College Dutchwomen scored twice within the final six minutes of the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit and force a 2-2 tie with Providence on Friday afternoon. Senior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg made 25 saves in the contest, tying her with former Dutchwomen Lundy Day with 2,262 career saves for first place all-time.
Freshman
Nicole Russell scored her first career goal to bring the Garnet and White within one at 2-1 with 5:29 left to play. Junior
Kathryn Tomaselli made a crossing pass to Russell who one timed it over the shoulder of Friars' Allie Morse for the goal.
With 1:40 remaining in regulation, Union would tie it at 2-2 on a crowded play in front that involved multiple diving bodies. Freshman
Hannah Erickson made an attempt as she was falling down right in front but Morse made the save. The puck stayed in the crease and Tomaselli was able to get her stick on it and poke it home through Morse's five-hole. The teams would go to overtime as neither squad could find the back of the cage in the final 100 seconds.
Providence outshot Union 3-2 in the extra session but Lundberg stayed strong in net, not letting anything get by her. The Friars looked like they had the game won as a slapshot deflected off Lundberg's stick and went in. But after looking at the replay, the refs determined the puck drilled the post to keep the game at 2-2 with just over two minutes to play.
After falling behind 2-0 through the first two periods, Union completely controlled play in the final 25 minutes, outshooting the Friars 11-4 including a 9-1 mark in the third period. For the game, the Dutchwomen outshot Providence 29-27.
Union will return to action next weekend as they play two ECAC contests on the road. They will face Princeton on Friday night at 7:00 pm followed by a matchup with Quinnipiac on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
