SCHENECTADY, NY - The Dutchwomen scored twice in the final nine minutes of regulation to knock off the University of Maine 2-0 on Friday night. Union has now won two consecutive contests and thee of the last four games.
After controlling possession for almost the entire third period, Union finally got on the scoreboard with 8:20 remaining in the contest.
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine had her intitial shot saved and the puck went to the side of the net.
Jessica Kaminsky was there to grab the rebound and tucked it into the corner of the cage to give the Dutchwomen the 1-0 advantage.
The Garnet and White increased their lead almost six minutes later with 2:38 left on the clock.
Kathryn Tomaselli gathered the puck behind the net and sent a perfect pass to
Nicole Russell who was skating right down the middle of the slot. Russell was able to one-time it past the Black Bear goaltender for her second goal of the season.
Shenae Lundberg sent away all 28 shots that came her way on the evening as the senior collectd her third shutout of the season and her sixth of her career.Both teams struggled to create offense in the game before Union's two tallies and neither side was successful on the powerplay. The Dutchwomen were able to kill off three penalities while the "U" failed to convert on two powerplay opportunities.
Union held a 25-24 edge in faceoffs with
Christine Valente going 9-8 in the circle while
Rebecca Babiak finished 7-6 to lead Union.
Both squads will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with the opening puck drop scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
