SCHENECTADY, NY - Union scored three times in the second period and held off a late surge from Brown in the closing minutes to pick up the 3-2 win over the Bears on Saturday afternoon to earn their first conference win of the season.
Senior
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine scored her second goal in as many games and in identical fashion to the one she scored against Yale last night. With the Dutchwomen on the powerplay,
Kathryn Davis and
Jessica Kaminsky sent the pass to Tancrell-Fontaine who was right atop the circle and rifled her shot past the goalie to give Union the 1-0 lead 5:53 into the second period.
Brown responded later in the period as Maddie Woo had her shot from the top of slot saved by
Shenae Lundberg but the rebound kicked to Sam Donovan who sent it to Ariana Rucker who in turn tipped it in to tie the game at 1-1.
The Dutchwomen would regain the lead just 81 seconds later as
Rebecca Babiak knocked home the rebound off the initial shots from Kaminksy and Tancrell-Fontaine.
Union added another goal just over three minutes later, as freshman
Hannah Erickson stole the puck at mid-ice and coasted down the left side and beat the Bears' netminder on the 1-on-1 opportunity to put the Garnet and White up 3-1. The goal was Erickson's first goal of her career.
Brown pulled their goalie with over two minutes remaining and would score the extra-attacker goal with 1:29 left to play to bring the Bears to within one. Brown continued to threaten and had several chances to tie it up in the final 89 seconds. BU was able to get off four shots in the final minute but Lundberg, as she has done all season, stayed strong between the pipes and turned away all of them to help perserve the 3-2 win. Lundberg finished the contest with 28 saves.
Union will return to the ice next weekend as they welcome Maine to Messa Rink for two non-conference games on Friday night (7:00pm) and Saturday afternoon (2:00pm).
