SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's hockey team looks to sweep their season series against Brown as they hit the road this weekend for rematches against Yale and the Bears.
What's On Tap
The Dutchwomen hit the road for rematches with Yale and Brown after failing to register a point in the ECAC standings in two games at home last weekend.
Their first stop is in New Haven, C.T. to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. at Ingalls Rink. The Bulldogs will be without freshmen phenom Phoebe Staenz, who leads the team in goals (9) and assists (14) in only 17 games played, as she earned a late spot on the Switzerland Women's Hockey Olympic team that will be competing in the Sochi Olympics.
Following the game with Yale, the Dutchwomen will travel along the coast to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen will look for their first ECAC sweep of the season by taking on junior forward Sarah Robson's (4-8-12) Bears at 4 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
Last Time Out
The Dutchwomen returned home after their first road trip in over a month to host #4 Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Dutchwomen were unable to register a goal as they were downed by the Golden Knights (5-0) and Saints (1-0).
  • On Friday, sophomore goaltender Madeleine Dahl registered 45 saves in three periods of work. In her second start of the season, Dahl tallied a game-high 20 saves in the second period alone. This marks the second time this season that Dahl has recorded 45 or more saves.
  • Clarkson forward Vanessa Gagnon opened up the scoring a little over 2 minutes into the game. Gagnon took a one-time feed from Rattray and buried a backhand shot past Dahl. Forward Brittany Styner also assisted on the play.
  • The Dutchwomen opened up the second period on the power play but were unable to capitalize on their one shot.
  • The Golden Knights would extend their lead to three late in the second period as Gagnon picked up her second goal of the night on a feed from Styner and Rattray.
  • Rattray and Carly Mercer each picked up power play goals in the third period to bring the score to 5-0.
  • Junior forward Christine Valente led all Dutchwomen skaters with 10 faceoff wins.
  • On Saturday,  junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg tallied 34 saves for the Dutchwomen. Lundberg racked up a game-high 14 saves in the first period and kept the Dutchwomen in the game down the stretch. She made nine of her saves with the Saints on the man advantage.
  • Saints defenseman Dayle Wilkinson tallied the lone goal of the contest on a power play late in the third period. She took a feed from Mel Desrochers as she streaked down the left wing and fired a shot through a defenseman's legs and that beat Lundberg. The goal came with under just over five minutes to play in the game.
  •  The Dutchwomen pulled Lundberg with 1:24 remaining in the period to give themselves an extra skater. They controlled the puck in the Saints zone for the remainder of the period but were unable to convert on several shot attempts.
  • The two teams traded chances in the first but the two goaltenders stood strong. The Saints had the only special teams opportunity in the period but were held off the board despite registering three shots on net.
  • Junior forward Christine Valente led the Dutchwomen in shots with six while Desrochers led all skaters with nine shots on goal.
  • Senior Mac Purvis and sophomore Courtney Turner tied for the lead in faceoff wins with six as the Dutchwomen edged the Saints 30-20.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale comes into the weekend clinging to seventh place in the ECAC standings with 14 points and a conference record of 5-7-4. With RPI and Dartmouth on their tails (13 points) for the final two ECAC playoff spots, the Bulldogs will look to bounce back from a two loss weekend against Cornell (3-6) and Colgate (1-2) last week.
  • Yale has struggled on the power play this season, having only registered nine power play goals all season. Their 10.6% conversion rate ranks them 29th in the nation, however, 44.4% (4) of their power play goals did come against the Dutchwomen in their first meeting of the season in November.
  • Yale has been pounded on the scoreboard so far this season. The Bulldogs have allowed exactly three goals a game which ties them with Minnesota State for 28th in the nation.
  • The Bulldogs are led offensively by freshmen Phoebe Staenz (9-14-23), who ranks third in the nation in freshmen scoring. With Staenz in Sochi to compete for Switzerland in the Olympics, a trio of sophomores will look to make up the scoring for the Bulldogs. Janelle Ferrara (5-13-18), Jamie Haddad (8-8-16) and Hanna Astrom (5-8-13) lead the Bulldog attack. Haddad had a pair of goals against the Dutchwomen in their last meeting.
  • Another freshmen, Taylor Marchin, leads the Yale defense corps this year. Through 13 games the rookie has picked up four goals and six assists. Senior Tara Tomimoto (3-6-9) and sophomore Kate Martini (4-4-8) have also supplied offense along the blue line. Martini also had a pair of goals against the Dutchwomen in their last meeting.
  • Junior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff has started all but two games for the Bulldogs this season. She has amassed a record of 7-12-4 with a 2.86 goals-against-average and .921 save-percentage. She has recorded shutouts over Harvard and Sacred Heart this season.
Scouting the Bears
The Bears come into the weekend with the worst record in the ECAC. Brown has only been able to record a league win over St. Lawrence this season to bring their conference record to 1-12-3. Their only other win of the season came against RIT in overtime in October. They come into the weekend after dropping three straight games, including a 3-2 loss to Colgate in overtime.
Only St. Cloud State (.183) has a worse winning percentage than the Bears (.196) but Brown has racked up the least amount of wins in the nation with two.
  • The bears have been abysmal on the power play, ranking dead last in the nation, with six goals on 76 attempts (7.9%).
  • Like the Dutchwomen, the Bears don't take a lot of penalties. Their 8.1 penalty minutes is tied with Union for the fifth lowest in the nation.
  • Junior Sarah Robson leads the Brown offense with 12 goals this season. Fellow junior Janice Yang leads the team in goals (7).
  • Brown is led defensively by senior captain Jennifer Nedow and fellow seniors Samantha Woodward and Kelly Kittredge. Nedow has been a steady sight along the blue line for the Bears, playing in every game since her freshman season. The Bears bring experience along the blue line with their top-two defensive pairings consisting of upperclassmen. The defensive corps is rounded out by a trio of sophomores and a freshman.
  • Senior goaltender Aubree Moore has started 21 of the 23 games for the Bears this season. She has racked up a record of 2-14-4 with a 2.67 goals-against-average and .923 save-percentage. Freshmen backup Monica Elvin has seen action in only two games this season.
