Union Skates to 3-3 Overtime Tie at #1 Boston U.

BOSTON – Union College started the new year with a 3-3 overtime tie against No. 1-ranked Boston University before a national television audience on the NBC Sports Network.  The contest was played before 5,286 fans on the 10th anniversary of the opening of Agganis Arena.  Union is unbeaten in its last three games (1-0-2) against top-ranked teams dating to last season.

The Dutchmen claimed a 3-2 lead with 5:36 left in regulation on Mike Vecchione's ninth goal of the season, a scoring play set up on pin-point passing from Daniel Ciampini and Spencer Foo.  The Terriers, however, struck on the power play 1:20 later to force overtime.  Union managed a 3-1 shot advantage in the extra period.

There was no scoring in the second period after the teams exchanged two goals each in the opening 20 minutes.

Spencer Foo one-timed a shot on a nifty pass from Matt Wilkins less than a minute after Boston's A.J. Greer scored the game's first goal on a rebound at the 5:47 mark.  Daniel Ciampini gave Union a 2-1 lead, scoring short-handed on a breakway after stealing the puck from his own blueline and placing a shot between the pads of Matt O'Connor. In the process, Ciampini extended his goal-scoring streak to five games.   BU pulled even, 2-2, on Nikolas Olsson's goal late in the period.

BU freshman Jack Eichel, a top NHL Draft prospect, did not play after returning from the IIHF World Junior Championship.

Union returns to ECAC Hockey action next week (Jan. 9-10), traveling to Princeton and Quinnipiac.
