HAMILTON, NY - Senior
Christine Valente assisted on both of junior
Kathryn Tomaselli's goals during the Dutchwomen's 2-2 tie with Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The assists gave Valente 35 in her career, tying Elizabeth Flanagan for the program record. She will have six games to try and become the all-time leader in school history.
Colgate broke a scoreless tie 8:03 gone by in the second period as Melissa Kueber flipped in the pass from Miriam Drubel. However, Tomaselli followed suit just under two minutes later as she flipped in a shot of her own from just outside the crease to tie the game at 1-1 at the 10:12 mark of the second.
Tomaselli found the back of the cage again and provided the Dutchwomen with a 2-1 lead with 2:53 remaining in the second period. The goal was set up perfectly on the pass from Valente. The senior captain, who was positioned just over center ice, sent the puck across to a streaking Tomaselli who buried the puck on the breakaway opportunity to give Union a one-goal edge.
With the Raiders on their first powerplay of the contest, Nicole Russ fired a shot at the top of the slot through the crowded zone to even the score at 2-2 with 12:44 left on the clock.
In the overtime session, Union had three great opportunities to try and win the contest but could not close the deal. First,
Bryanne Panchuk tried a backhanded shot right in front but was denied by Colgate's Rando. Tomaselli followed with a slap shot inside the left circle with just over 30 seconds left but Rando made a great kick save to keep the score tied at 2-2. And with less than 10 seconds to go, Tomaselli tried to get off a shot from inside the slot but three Colgate defenders closed in around her, preventing her from getting off the shot.
The Garnet and White outshot the Raiders 32-26 in the contest and senior
Shenae Lundberg made 24 stops in the tie.
Union will be back in action next weekend with two top 10 matchups as they welcome St. Lawrence and Clarkson to Messa Rink.
Notes: The tie snaps a 29-game losing streak to Colgate as the Raiders now lead the all-time series (29-0-1)...
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine kept pace with Valente, earning her 33rd career assist. She is now two behind Valente and Flanagan for the school record (35).
