Valente Sets Assists Record as Union Rallies to Tie #8-St. Lawrence, 1-1

SCHENECTADY, NY - Union's Kathryn Tomaselli provided the lone offense for the Dutchwomen as the junior scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season 6:28 into the third period as the Dutchwomen tied the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence Saints, 1-1, on Friday night in ECAC action. Christine Valente recorded an assist on the goal, her 36th of her career, becoming the all-time assists leader in Union College women's hockey history. She broke Elizabeth Flanagan's previous mark of 35.

This marks Valente's fifth straight game with an assist and sixth consecutive contest with at least one point. Both career-highs for the West Haven, CT native.

The Dutchwomen were frustrating on the defensive end all night as Union blocked 32 shots, five shy of their season-high of 37 set on December 2nd in a 1-0 win at Northeastern. Haley Welch led the way with seven blocks and Rebecca Babiak redirected six of her own. Kelly McGrath, playing in her first game since October 25th, made three blocks as did Valente and Nicole Russell. Shenae Lundberg was phenominal between the pipes stopping 41 shots in the contest and kept the Saints out of the scoring column for the final 58:15 minutes of the game.

The Saints got on the scoreboard just 1:45 into the first period as Megan Armstrong fired a shot at the top of the slot on net. Lundberg made the initial kick save on the shot but the puck ricocheted off her leg pad and into the net to give SLU the early 1-0 lead.

With 6:28 gone by into the third period, Alex Tancrell-Fontaine slid a past to Tomaselli right in front of the crease. Tomaselli's first shot went right into the chest pads of St. Lawrence's Carmen Macdonald. The rebound, however, went right to Valente who dished it right back to Tomaselli who finished it to tie the game at 1-1.

The Dutchwomen played stellar defense in the final period to keep the game tied as Lundberg and company turned away 30 of the Saints' 43 shots in the stanza with the senior netminder saving 17 and the defensive unit blocking 13 shots to keep the game close and deadlocked at 1-1.

Lundberg made possibly her biggest save of the night with just six seconds left in regulation as Amanda Bouliet sent a bullet through a crowded zone but Lundberg turned away the shot with the quick kick save.

The Garnet and White outshot SLU 2-1 in the overtime session with no real scoring threat for either side.

The Dutchwomen also dominated the faceoff circle, going 34-24, led by Babiak's 7-2 mark. Valente won 14 out of 26 faceoffs and Erica Kelly was 10-9 in the circle.

Union will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host 10th-ranked Clarkson with the opening faceoff scheduled for 4:00pm.
