Dutchmen, Maine play 1-1 overtime tie

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman forward Brendan Taylor scored his first collegiate goal as Union College and the University of Maine tied, 1-1 Friday night in a non-league game at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen now stand 1-0-2 while the Black Bears have three ties in their first three games of the season.

Union improved to 13-1-1 in the last 15 games against Hockey East opponents. Maine outshot Union, 33-29 and the penalty kill worked for both squads as the Black Bears were 0 for 6 while the Dutchmen had five power play chances but did not score on them.

Rob McGovern made 28 saves for the guests while Alex Sakellaropoulos stopped 32 for Union, including 15 in the second period. The first period was scoreless and Union had an 8-6 shot advantage. Taylor took a pass from Lichtenwald and shot it in to the right side of goaltender Rob McGovern 4:27 into the second period for the 1-0 advantage. Their linemates, Tyle rHynes, also assisted on the play.

The Unon lead held up until 5:56 remaining in regulation, when Brian Morgan scored from the right circle for his second of the year. Andrew Tegler and Sam Becker had the assists.

Union's best chance came with a partial breakaway from Mark Dufour but McGovern came out to challenge and cut down the shot and made the stop with 2:20 left in the overtime. He was shaken up on the play but continued.

The two teams meet again Saturday night at Messa Rink.
