SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman goaltender
Jake Kupsky recorded 26 saves and posted a shutout in his collegiate debut to lead Union College to a 2-0 shutout over the University of Maine at Messa Rink Saturday night. The Dutchmen remained undefeated and improved to 2-0-2 while the Black Bears suffered their first loss and now stand 0-1-3.
Union outshot Maine, 33-26 and won 27 of 42 faceoffs. Sebastian Gingras and
Mike Vecchione scored for the Dutchmen, who killed off three Maine power play opportunities. Matt Morris made 31 saves in the Black Bear net.
As was the case Friday night with these teams, the game was scoreless after the first period. Union had an 11-4 shot advantage but could not score on Morris in the first period. The second period also was scoreless, with Kupsky making many big saves late in the period and winding up with 11 in that stanza while Morris stopped 10.
Gingras finally broke the ice 5:36 into the third. Brednan Taylor dished to
Tyler Hynes, who came from behind the net and brought the puck out in front, finding Ginras at the right point. The senior's shot found its way through traffic for the 1-0 lead. There was a review for possible goaltender interference but the goal was allowed.
Vecchione added insurance with his first of the year with 5:00 left in regulation. Gingras pushed the puck out of a crowd along the right boards in his own end, finding Vecchione open along the boards. Vecchione then went end-to-end scoring from the right circle for the 2-0 lead.
Union's long October homestand continues next weekend with a Friday game against Michigan at 7:30 p.m. and a Saturday contest against New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
