SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman forward
Mark Dufour scored two goals as the #18 Union College men's ice hockey team tied #11 University of Michigan, 5-5 at Messa Rink Saturday night. Both teams remained undefeated as the Dutchmen are now 2-0-3 and the Wolverines are 2-0-1.
Jeff Taylor and
Noah Henry had two assists each and Union also got goals from
Ryan Scarfo,
Michael Pontarelli and
Roman Ammirato.
Alex Sakellaropoulos made 31 saves for Union, including 12 in the third period.
Justin Selman scored twice and Werenski had two assists for Michigan, who had five different goal scorers. Steve Racine stopped 28, and like Sakellaropoulos, made four saves in overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Dufour scored his first collegiate goal and gave Union a 1-0 lead at 2:04 of the second. He stole the puck from a Michigan player at the Wolverine blueline and broke in and scored a back hander over the goalie's right shoulder. Alex Kile scored his second of the season at 14:14. He tipped in a pass from Nolan De Jong and JT Compher also had an assist. The Dutchmen got two goals in the final 2:28 of the second period for a 3-1 lead entering the third. The 2-1 lead came on Scarfo's second of the season at 17:32.
Noah Henry fed it from his own end up to
Spencer Foo, who found Scarfo on the left side of the net. With just 14 seconds left in the period, Dufour broke in on the left and converted a Taylor pass. The play began with a save and the first career assist for Sakellaropoulos.
Michigan scored the next three in a wide open, high scoring third period. Tyler Motte's second of the year made it 3-2 at 1:23 from Compher and Kyle Connor. Compher won the face off and quickly got it to Motte close in front. The Wolverines tied it at 3-3 at 4:57. Selman scored his first from Kyle Connor and Werenski, then at 9:21, Cooper Marody's second of the year gave the guests their first lead of the night at 4-3, with a shot from the left side after an assist from Werenski. Pontarelli tied it a 10:24 with his second of the year after Taylor forced a turnover in the Michigan zone and dished to Pontarelli. Union regained the lead at 5-4 at 14:32 as Ammirato got his second of the season with assists to Pontarelli and Henry.
But with an extra attacker on the ice, after Racine was pulled with 1:20 remaining in regulation, Michigan tied it at 5-5. Compher's shot from the mid point was deflected in front by Selman, and also assisted by Cristoval Nieves. Both goalies stopped all four opposing shots in the extra session.
Union hosts the University of New Hampshire tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Messa Rink.
