SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Rochester Institute of Technology held on in the final minutes for a 2-1 non-league women's ice hockey victory over Union College at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improved to 3-4 while the Dutchwomen now stand 0-5-2.
RIT had a 31-23 shot advantage as Brook Stoddart made 22 saves.
Melissa Black stopped 29 for the Dutchwomen.
Kendall Cornine provided the only scoring in the first period when she got a steal and breakaway at 2:52 early in the contest. It was her second of the young season. Later in the period Union's
Kathryn Tomaselli got a break in pass from
Arianna Kosakowski but her deke shot was stopped by Stoddart's left pad
Union tied it with 4:29 left in the second period. Jess Paton's shot from the top of the circle hit the crossbar but came down and rolled in behind Black. Reagan Rust and Cassie Clayton assisted on Paton's second of the season. Union got on the board on Tomaselli's third of the year. Her centering pass went off an RIT defenseman outside the left post and bounced in, and the goal was assisted by
Alli Devins and
Elizabeth Otten.
Union had an extra attacker with 1:44 left and had numerous chances. With just 14 seconds left,
Emily Erickson came in clear over the blueline to the right of Stoddart, but Logan Land backchecked and dove in just in time to break up the opportunity.
The Dutchwomen are on the road next week to open ECAC Hockey play. Union plays at Colgate October 30 and at Cornell the following day, both at 3 p.m.
