Brown pulls out 3-2 overtime win over Dutchmen

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Max Willman scored the game winner with 28 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Brown University to a 3-2 victory over Union College in an ECAC Hockey game at Messa Rink Friday night. It was the first win of the season for the Bears (1-3-0 overall, 1-2 in ECAC Hockey) while the Dutchmen fell to 3-5-3 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Willman got a pass from behind the net from Tyler Bird and skated across in front of the crease to put in his first of the season. Nick Lappin had tied it with 1:37 remaining in regulation for the Bears. Tommy Marchin's forecheck created a turnover behind the Union net, and Marchin found Lappin out in front Lappin's second of the year.

Union had a 39-26 shot advantage, but Brown had a 5-1 shot advantage in overtime. Brown's Tim Ernst made 37 saves, including 14 each in the first and second periods. Alex Sakellaropoulos made 23 stops, with 10 coming in the third period of play.

The Dutchmen outshot the Bears, 14-3 in the first period, but neither team lit the lamp. Union took a 1-0 lead when Michael Pontarelli tipped in a drive from the point at 5:44 of the second. Sebastien Gingras and Jeff Taylor had the assists on Pontarelli's third score of the season and it came on a five minute power play. The Dutchmen made it 2-0 at 8:01, on the same five minute major for Brown. Ryan Scarfo scored close in front from a drive from the middle of the blueline and notched his team best sixth score of the season. Nick DeSimone and Greg Campbell had the assists. With 2:08 remaining in the second period, Brown pulled to within one as Brandon Pfeil scored his first of the season.
