CANTON, NY—The Union College men's ice hockey team was able to tie the score up 2-2 going into the first period intermission, but four goals from St. Lawrence allowed them to take the victory 6-3.
To start the first period,
Jake Kupsky made two close saves before
Ryan Walker was sent to the penalty box for tripping giving the Saints a power play opportunity. Nola Gluchowski and Joe Sullivan found Gavin Bayreuther to post St. Lawrence's first goal. Less than a minute later,
Brett Supinski passed to
Mike Vecchione who had a good wrister from the right circle to tie the game up 2-2. 45 seconds later, the Saints' Ryan Lough and Christain Horn found Eric Sweetman who placed one behind Kupsky to take the lead 2-1. With less than two minutes remaining in the first period,
Michael Pontarelli took a shot with
Ryan Scarfo as the screen, the puck rebounded and Scarfo forced it in through the scrum to tie the game up at 2-2.
Following the first period intermission, St. Lawrence started fast with an Alex Hagan goal that was assisted by Mike Graham and Drew Smolcynski. At 13:02, the Saints' Woody Hudson was put in the box for tripping. Following that,
Matt Wilkins found Vecchione from the left side who buried it in between the posts for a power play goal to tie the game at 3-3.
St. Lawrence was able to bang in three more goals to close out the second period. Sullivan was found by Sweetman and Mike Marnell to put the Saints up 4-3. Sullivan followed that up with another goal, assisted from Sweetman and Brian Ward. SLU took a 6-3 lead when Bayreuther and Tommy Thompson found Smolcynski with less than four minutes in the second. Alex Sakellaropoulous switched with Kupsky following the Saint's sixth goal.
Sakellaropoulos was able to hold St. Lawrence scoreless for the third period with 13 saves in 23 minutes. Kupsky tallied 24 saves in his time on the ice.
The Dutchmen head to Cheel Arena to take on Clarkson on November 7 at 7 p.m.
