PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Union College women's ice hockey team's
Melissa Black made 36 saves in the 4-1 loss to Providence College at Schneider Arena.
Madison Myers made 15 saves for her fourth win of the year for the Friars.
The Dutchwomen opened the scoring when
Jamie Smith poked one in behind the Myers, off assists from
Jacyn Reeves and
Alli Devins. The power play goal came at 12:22 of the first. It was Smith's third goal of the season.
Providence responded soon at the 15:48 mark of the first period. Danielle Hardy notched her second goal of the season after she sent a bouncing puck into the back of the net. Madison Sansone picked up the puck in the corner and moved it to Ariana Buxman on the point. Hardy picked up the rebound of Buxman's shot and evened it at 1-1 at 15:48.
The Friars scored three unanswered goals in the second period to take a three-goal lead. Brittney Thunstrom one-timed the puck through Black's legs to give the Friars the lead. Emily Landry and Courtney Kukowski provided the assists and it was 2-1 at 1:36. Natasia Burzynski collected her first goal as a Friar with just under three minutes to go in the second period. Christina Putigna slipped the puck past the Union defenders, to send Burznski on a breakaway, who then wristed it in for a 3-1 lead at 17:04.
Providence struck a final goal less than a minute later, on the power play, at 18:00. Putigna earned her second point of the game scoring along the goal line. She was assisted on the play by Lexi Romanchuk and Sansone.
The Dutchwomen return home to take on ECAC opponents Brown and Yale on Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5, respectively at 3 p.m. Â
