Union Suffers 7-1 Setback at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. –  A rough second period did the Dutchmen in as Union fell to St. Lawrence, 7-1, in ECAC Hockey action from Appleton Arena.  The win extended SLU's winning streak to seven games.

St. Lawrence scored five goals in the second period, including three times in the opening 5:40 to build at 4-0 lead. The onslaught began when Joe Sullivan scored in the slot, followed by Alex Dahl jamming in a rebound.  Tommy Thompson then scored his second goal of the night, breaking in alone on Alex Sakellaropoulos for a short-handed tally.

The Saints added two more tallies on goals from Sean McGovern at 11:04 and Nolan Gluchowski (power play) at 17:42.

Thompson also scored at 13:13 of the first period when he broke free along the left boards and tucked a backhander between the pads of Colin Stevens. SLU finished scoring with a third-period goal from Ryan Lough.

Ryan Scarfo foiled Kyle Hayton's shutout bid with 1:01 left on the clock. Scarfo shares team rookie goal-scoring honors with nine goals on the year.

The Garnet were outshot, 38-33, and finished 0-for-6 on the power play.

Union will host Yale next Friday (Feb. 13) on White Out Night at Messa Rink.

Notes:

Matt Wilkins was a late scratch after taking a puck to the body last night at Clarkson ... Union showed a power play unit with five freshman: J.C. Brassard, Nick DeSimone, Ryan Scarfo, Spencer Foo and Tyler Hynes.
