MANKATO, Minn. - The Union College women's ice hockey team played to a 2-2 overtime tie in its 2015-16 season opener against Minnesota State-Mankato Friday night. Freshman goalie
Melissa Black tallied 44 saves, including 21 in the second period, while senior
Kathryn Tomaselli scored a pair of power play goals. Tomaselli was named No. 1 Star of the Game.
Union broke a scoreless tie at the 12:12 mark of the second period as Tomaselli scored the first goal of the season off assists from
Alli Devins and
Jessica Kaminsky. The Mavericks' Anna Fiegert followed suit just four minutes later with Katie Johnson and Hannah Davidson assisting on the play.
Tomaselli found the back of the net again and provided the Dutchwomen with a 2-1 lead just four minutes into the third period. The goal was set up on passes from
Elizabeth Otten and Devins, who finished with two helpers on the night.
With two minutes left in the third, Mankato knotted the game at 2-2 when Sara Bustad found Corbin Boyd in front of the net.
In overtime, Black kept Union in the game by making four saves. She was aided by a stellar defense in front of her, as Union finished with 22 blocked shots.
Union will be back in action tomorrow as they finish up the non-conference series with Minnesota State-Mankato at 3:07 pm ET/ 2:07 pm CT.
