Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Dutchwomen Defeated by Syracuse

SCHENECTADY, NY—The Union College women's ice hockey team fell 4-0 against Syracuse on Tuesday evening at Messa Rink.

Union blocked 18 shots with Jessica Kaminsky, Arianna Kosakowski, and Brandy Streeter tallying three each. Melissa Black made 34 saves, including 19 in the third period.

In the first period, the Dutchwomen had many opportunities outshooting the Orange 11-9. With 4:47 left in the first, Hannah Erickson took a shot from the left circle that shot off Jenn Gilligan's left shoulder pad.

In the second period, Syracuse scored two early goals. Alysha Burriss came in from the left circle and took a shot for the five hole, it ricocheted off Black's left leg pad and into the net. She was assisted by Emily Costales and Larissa Martyniuk. Less than 30 seconds later, a similar scenario happened when Nicole Renault shot at Black's five hole again and the puck ricocheted off her right leg pad into the back of the net.

The Dutch trailed the Orange 2-0 going into the third period. Union's Courtney Turner had a breakaway shot but the goaltender made a last minute save. Union held the Orange from scoring in the first 18 minutes of play until SU was able to string together two consecutive goals.  Stephanie Grossi shot straight at Black and it slid through between her pads allowing SU to go up 3-0. Nicole Ferrara and Melissa Piacentini set up Jessica Sibley's shot that went in through the right side by Black's helmet.

Union takes on RPI in Troy on Friday, January 15 at 3 p.m., before returning home on the 16th to take on RPI at 3 p.m.
