SCHENECTADY, NY--Â The Union College Dutchwomen continue their 2015-16 season with games against ECAC opponents and crosstown rivals Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Union travels to Troy on Friday, January 15 for a 3 p.m puck drop. On Saturday, January 16 the teams will face-off at Messa Rink at 3 p.m. Â The Dutchwomen are in search of their first win of the season as they fell to Syracuse on January 12. RPI is looking to add another victory after falling to Princeton on Jan. 9.Â
Last Time OutThe Union College women's ice hockey team fell 4-0 against Syracuse on Tuesday evening at Messa Rink.
Union blocked 18 shots with
Jessica Kaminsky,
Arianna Kosakowski, and
Brandy Streeter tallying three each.
Melissa Black made 34 saves, including 19 in the third period.
In the first period, the Dutchwomen had many opportunities outshooting the Orange 11-9. With 4:47 left in the first,
Hannah Erickson took a shot from the left circle that shot off Jenn Gilligan's left shoulder pad.
In the second period, Syracuse scored two early goals. Alysha Burriss came in from the left circle and took a shot for the five hole, it ricocheted off Black's left leg pad and into the net. She was assisted by Emily Costales and Larissa Martyniuk. Less than 30 seconds later, a similar scenario happened when Nicole Renault shot at Black's five hole again and the puck ricocheted off her right leg pad into the back of the net.
The Dutch trailed the Orange 2-0 going into the third period. Union's
Courtney Turner had a breakaway shot but the goaltender made a last minute save. Union held the Orange from scoring in the first 18 minutes of play until SU was able to string together two consecutive goals. Â Stephanie Grossi shot straight at Black and it slid through between her pads allowing SU to go up 3-0. Nicole Ferrara and Melissa Piacentini set up Jessica Sibley's shot that went in through the right side by Black's helmet.
Black's leading the PackMelissa Black tallied her 700th career save against No. 4/4 Quinnipiac on Saturday. The goalie ranks ninth in the NCAA in save percentage (.934). She ranks fifth in the ECAC in save percentage. Black ranks twenty-sixth in goals-against-average (2.64). Currently, she has 741 saves in 1181:03 minutes between the posts. She averages 33.68 saves per game, only allowing 52 goals (2.36 goals/game).Â
Scouting the EngineersRensselaer has a 5-11-4 record this season (3-5-2 in ECAC play). Mari Mankey leads the team with 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) followed by Alexa Gruschow with 12 points (9-3-12) and Katie Rooney with eight points (6-2-8). Goaltender Lovisa Selander has a 2.18 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage, with a 4-10-4 record. Sara Till has saw play in two games with a 3.26 goals-against-average and a .882 save percentage. Till has a 1-1-0 record.Â
