ALBANY, NY - Union College women's hockey first year forward
Haley Shugart was named as the ECAC Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Shugart scored two goals this week both coming in Saturday's 4-2 win over Penn State University. The first goal just 1:28 into the second period as Shugart tapped home a rebound off of a shot from
Abby Ellis to put the Dutchwomen ahead 2-1. Shugart was not done in the period as she and
Rachel de Perio got out on a 2-1 breakaway. De Perio feed Shugart right in front of the net and Shugart finished the point blank chance to put Union up 3-1 with eight minutes remaining in the second period. This would be the eventual game winner.
These were the Toronto, Ont. native's first goals in a Union sweater.
Shugart also recorded an assist on the lone Dutchwomen goal Tuesday against University of Vermont setting up Caitlyn McClaren on a powerplay opportunity. Shugart is tied for the team lead in points (4) with fellow first year de Perio and tied for the team lead in goals (2) with
Emily Erickson and McClaren.
Union is back on the ice this weekend as it travels to RIT for a pair of games in Rochester. Friday night's tilt is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. while Saturday's puck drop is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
