ANN ARBOR, MICH.—The Union College men's hockey team scored two goals in the final five minutes to secure a 4-3 come-from-behind win against No. 11/12 Michigan, Friday night at Yost Arena in the season opener for both teams.
Spencer Foo led the Dutchmen offense with two goals and an assist.
Jeff Taylor produced a goal and two assists,
Mike Vecchione finished with a goal and an assist and
Sebastian Vidmar had a pair of helpers.
Brett Supinski also dished out an assist. In goal, senior goaltender
Alex Sakellaropoulos stopped 20 of 23 shots.
Michigan's Sam Piazza opened the scoring at 8:54 with a wrist shot high to the glove side after a Jake Slaker faceoff win.
The Wolverines doubled their lead just over three minutes later on a Tony Calderone shorthanded tally. Max Shuart poked a puck out of Michigan's defensive zone just as Calderone's penalty expired after a 5-on-3, and he converted on the ensuing breakaway at 11:52.
Foo cut the Union deficit in half at 15:10, walking in from the point and beating Michigan goaltender Zach Nagelvoort with a wrist shot through traffic from the left circle.
Foo's second of the night came 3:23 later with wrist shot from the slot on a behind-the-net pass from Supinski.
Michigan regained the lead at 1:34 of the second when Will Lockwood scored on an odd-man rush.
Vecchione answered for Union with a power play goal late in the late in the third, carrying the puck into the offensive before snapping home a low shot at 15:23.
Taylor gave the Dutchmen the only lead they would need at 17:51, unloading a one-timer on a feed from Foo.
Union outshot Michigan 40-23, including a 15-7 advantage in the third period. The Dutchmen were 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Wolverines were 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Nagelvoort made 36 saves on 40 shots.
Union and Michigan close out their series at 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8.
