SCHENECTADY, NY -- Courtney Casey drove in all three runs and
Dana Dolinko pitched a seven hitter in a 3-1 Union College softball victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology in the opener of a Liberty League doubleheader at Alexander Field Sunday. The Tigers won the second contest, 9-1 in five innings. Union is now 2-2 in league play (5-11 overall) while RIT stands 1-3 in the Liberty League and 7-9 for the season.
Dolinko won her fourth of the season, striking out four. She allowed just one hit over the last three innings and retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced. Casey had a bases loaded double in the third inning to provide the runs for the triumph. Amanda Cook had the lone RBI for RIT with a double in the first inning. Sierra Valentine gave up just four hits for the Tigers (two to Casey), with three coming in the third inning. She struck out six. Tori Blaker and Alexandria Lunderman had two hits each for the Tigers.
Lauren Mahar won for the third time this season, with five hits and one run allowed in five innings while striking out three. Sam Killian was the offensive star for the Tigers, with three hits and five RBIs including her first homer of the season, a two run shot in the third. Sarah Thayer drove in three and joined Danielle Hotz with two hits each. RIT scored four unearned runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two out two run double by Thayer. Killian's two run single was the highlight of a three run fifth inning that produced the eight run lead for the Tigers.
Dani Hennel took the loss for Union, with five hits allowed in 4 1/3 innings.
Joanna Chalifoux had two of Union's five hits and drove in the lone run with a single in the third inning.
Union returns to action Wednesday to host Hamilton for a non-league home doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
