SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a 7-6 softball win over the University of Rochester in the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader Saturday at Alexander Field. The Yellowjackets won the opener, 7-2. Both teams are 1-1 in league play, while Union is 4-10 overall and Rochester stands 8-14.
In the nightcap, the Dutchwomen trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the sixth. Union had RBI hits by
Dani Hennel and
Dana Dolinko and an RBI infield groundout by
Courtney Casey while scoring another run on an outfield throwing error. Rochester had the bases loaded with one run in in the top of the seventh but Hennel, who came in to pitch relief in the seventh, ended the threat and the game when she got a fly out to center to cap the comeback. MacKenzie Cronin had an RBI single in the first and sacrifice fly in the third for Rochester. Union tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third on consecutive RBI singles by Casey and
Joanna Chalifoux. Rochester took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two out RBI single by Rachael Peitz, but an RBI single by Casey in the bottom of that frame knotted it at 3-3. Rochester made it 5-3 in the top of the sixth with an RBI double by Kayla Kibling followed by a single from Harleigh Kaczegowicz that drove in the fifth run, and Union trailed by two entering the sixth.
Kara Brown had three hits for the Dutchwomen, while Dolinko, Casey,
Kim Puzo and
Nikki Ditizio had two each for Union, which had 13 hits in the game. Dolinko got the win in relief with 1 2/3 innings of work, allowing one run and three hits while striking out a batter.
Kaczegowicz and Cronin had three hits each for Rochester, and Cronin had two RBIs while the Yellowjackets had 15 hits. Sam Malecki went the distance, giving up five earned runs while striking out three.
Eleni Wechsler got the win in the opener allowing one earned run and six hits while striking out six in the seven inning complete game performance. Lauren Muni had three hits and two RBIs while Gianna Melillo and Jocelynn Blackshear also drove in two each. Kayla Kibling, Kaczegowicz and Cronin had two hits each for the guests. Union scored an unearned run in the first and Hennel drove in a run in the second. Rochester took a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a homer by Muni and a two-run pinch hit double by Melillo. They added three in the sixth on a two-run home run by Blackshear and a solo shot by Shelby Corning. Muni's third hit was an RBI single in the seventh. Six different Dutchwomen had one hit each.
Union continues Liberty League home play with a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Rochester Institute of Technology.
