THIS WEEKEND
The Dutchwomen hit the road this weekend, Dec. 1-2, for an ECAC series against Yale and Brown. Friday's contest against the Bulldogs begins at 6 p.m. (ET) and Saturday's game against the Bears is set for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
LAST TIME OUT
Union vs. UMaine - Nov. 24
Last weekend the Dutchwomen took on the Black Bears for the 21st time since 2003. Union earned a draw with Maine in the Friday night matchup, 3-3, and lost 2-1 the following afternoon.
Jordi Naidrich scored her first goal of the year Friday night, followed by goals from Katie Laughlin and
Haley Shugart. Despite starting the overtime period on a power play, the Dutchwomen were unable to capitalize on the advantage and settled for a tie.
Union vs. UMaine - Nov. 25
Saturday's matchup was a stalemate, including incredible defense from Union. Tied at 1-1, Maine scored with just under four minutes to go in regulation and secured the 2-1 victory. The Black Bears out shot Union, 41-19.
TAKE TWO
The Dutchwomen will rematch against Brown and Yale University this weekend on the road. Union faced off against the two teams the weekend of Oct. 27-28, where the Dutch swept the two ECAC opponents for the first time in program history and opened up ECAC play at the top of the standings, with a 2-0 record. First year goaltender
Coco Francis had 61 saves over the course of the weekend and won her first two starts in Messa Rink, the first ever Union goaltender to do so.
FASHIONABLY LATE
Sophomore
Haley Shugart joined the 2017-18 season late due to injury. Shugart joined the Dutchwomen on the ice for game No. 7 of the season against Brown University, which was also Union's first victory of the season. In her sophomore year debut, she had one goal and one assist against the Bears that helped lift Union 6-3 over the ECAC opponent. Shugart has four points this season, three of which have happened in the third period, coming off two goals and two assists. She leads the Dutchwomen in third period scoring.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Despite being defensemen by nature, Union's defenders have not let that title define them. The Dutchwomen's defense leads the ECAC in scoring defenses with 10 goals. They also rank third in points amongst league defenses, with 25 points. Junior defenseman Ari Kosakowski leads the league as the leading goal scorer among defenders, with four goals on the year.
UNDERCLASSMEN WITH AN UPPER HAND
Union's sophomores have proved to be steady hands for the Dutchwomen this year.
Rachel de Perio,
Katelynn Russ,
Cheyenne Harris,
Jordi Naidrich and
Haley Shugart combine for 27 of Union's 60 points. Russ has five goals on the year so far, already surpassing her goal total last season of four. One of the Dutch's unsung heroes, de Perio, has five assists on the year and no goals yet.
