Devins Nets Game Winner on Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, NY - With 1:23 remaining in the game and the game tied 1-1, Dartmouth College committed a penalty to put Union College on the powerplay for the remainder of the game.

After a timeout by coach Josh Sciba, Dutchwomen first year forward Katelynn Russ won the draw and set up their powerplay chance. After a shot by first year forward Cheyenne Harris was stopped by Dartmouth goalie Robyn Chemago, the puck got worked to the point where junior defenseman Caitlyn McLaren. The shot was kicked away with the left pad by Chemago falling right to the tape of senior forward Alli Devins who slid it between the glove and the left pad Chemago with 1:09 left on the clock. McLaren and Harris picked up assists on the power play goal.

This would prove to be the decisive game winner as Union was able to kill off the remaining time on the clock as it claimed its fifth victory of the season by a final of 2-1 at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon.

This is the most victories that the Dutchwomen have had in one season since 2013-14 when they won a program record nine games. It is also the first time that a Dutchwomen team has won a senior day game. This is also the second all-time win against Dartmouth as the other victory came on Nov. 1, 2014 when they beat the Big Green 3-0 at Messa.

They were helped right off the start when Harris and Russ got out on a two-on-one break. Harris' first shot was stopped by Chemago but, Harris cleaned up her own rebound and put it in the back of the net. The goal came just 52 seconds into the first period as Russ was credited with the assist. It was the fastest goal by a Union player since Dec. 5, 2015 when Jacyn Reeves scored against Yale.

Union was also helped by another strong performance in net by first year goalie Kate Spooner. She made 38 saves in the game while allowing just one goal which came at the end of the first period.

The Dutchwomen play their final set of regular season games in 2016-17 as they travel to Princeton on Feb. 17 at 6:00 p.m. while playing at Quinnipiac on Feb. 18 at 3:00 p.m.
