SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's ice hockey team earned their first victory of the year in today's season opener exhibition game against the Barrie Sharks of the PWHL.
"Today was a great opportunity for our family to build some confidence, make mistakes and come together as a team," said Head Coach
Josh Sciba, post game. "We knew it wouldn't be perfect so we were very pleased with our effort and resiliency, especially late in the game."
The Dutchwomen came out aggressive early in the game. With a handful of firsts, first-year
Sierra Lee earned her first career goal to give Union their first lead of the day in the first period.Â
With approximately 9:30 to go in the second period, Barrie Shark Malory Dominico, 2019, netted the puck to settle the score. Union went on a powerplay with 15.4 seconds to go in the second period, but with not enough time, the period ended at a 1-1 stalemate.Â
Madie Stockfish, 2018, opened up action for the Sharks in the third period, with a goal at 11:58, to give Barrie the 2-1 advantage over Union. That goal would go unanswered until a five on three power play in Union's favor left room for error with 4:04 to go in regulation. The Dutch took full advantage of the opportunity as Lee scored her second goal of the day to bring the Dutchwomen in line 2-2 with the Sharks. Less than five seconds later, sophomoreÂ
Katelynn Russ also netted her first goal of the season and ultimately gave Union the 3-2 season opener victory.Â
"Tonight was a nice first step for our team this season," said Assistant Coach
Mitch Baker. "Barrie is a hard working team that competed well five-on-five all game long. We were happy with the resilience of our team and are encouraged by the strong special teams play, especially late in the game."
"Barrie challenged us and our power play took advantage of some opportunities that made the difference in the game," Sciba added.
Union's goal keepers combined for 18 saves on the day.
Kate Spooner had four,
Amelia Murray with six and first year
Coco Francis had eight of her own. The Dutchwomen recorded 77 attempted shots as a team.
