Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Dutchmen power past Bulldogs

NEW HAVEN, CT – It was a slugfest at Ingalls Rink on Friday night, but the Union College men's hockey team came out victorious with a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs.

The win improves Union to 9-4-0 in ECAC Hockey as the Dutchmen sit in third place, while Yale falls to 5-7-1 in league play.

Yale and Union traded goals in both the first and second periods, as neither side seemed able to pull away from the other.

Senior Ryan Scarfo opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play, splitting a pair of Bulldog defensemen before popping in a goal over the shoulder of Sam Tucker. However, Yale responded at the 15:22 mark of the period, scoring an off-angle goal to tie the game back up before heading into the first intermission.

Union earned its first power play of the game, just 17 seconds into the second period. After going most of the opportunity without a good look on net, Sebastian Vidmar received the puck at the back door with a wide open net in front of him. The junior Swede didn't hesitate and scored his seventh of the season to put the Dutchmen back on top.

Midway through the second, Union earned another power play, but it would be Yale who would find the back of the net during the two-minute span. Luke Stevens found the puck behind the Union defensemen and scored a breakaway goal at the 10:30 mark to, once again, tie the game up for the Bulldogs.

Union netminder, Darion Hanson would then deny the Bulldogs for the remainder of the contest, including a nice breakaway stop to keep the game tied at 2-2 before the end of the second.

Both teams then battled tough in the third period, but Union would be the lone goal scorer in the frame.

Scarfo picked up the loose puck on a scramble in the Yale end and fired a shot that was stopped by Tucker. However, Cole Maier got his stick on the rebound and poked it loose to the far side of the net, where Liam Morgan buried it into the open net for his first collegiate goal.

Yale pushed hard in the final minute of play with an extra attacker, but Hanson and the Dutchman defense didn't relent. A Yale penalty in the final seconds of the game then sealed the victory for Union.

The Dutchmen were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, while scoring one power-play goal on three opportunities.

Union takes on Brown tomorrow at 7 p.m. (ET) to finish off the weekend.
