Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Starts Season with 4-1 win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Three skaters recorded two points as the Union College men's hockey team skated to a season-opening 4-1 win against Army West Point on Saturday night.

The night was started with a recognition of Robert Knibb '81, Anthony Ianniello '65, and Frank '73 and Colleen Messa, the three donors who helped to bring a new video board to the home of Union College Hockey. Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin '93 and Union College President Dr. David Harris welcomed and thanked the donors in a pregame ceremony to recognize the trio for their generous gift to Union College.

After scoring the first goal of the season in the closing minutes of the first period, Union never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Dutchmen would go on to score three goals in the third period to secure the 4-1 win.

How It Happened
After what was looking to be a scoreless first period, Sam Morton won an offensive face off late in the period to Jack Adams, who quickly dished it over to Greg Campbell at the point for a one-timer that beat Black Knight goaltender Jared Dempsey for the first tally of the game.

Building off the momentum of the first goal, the Dutchmen built upon their lead early in the second period. Cole Maier scored his 30th career goal on a rebound attempt in front of the net less than three minute into the frame.

Less than four minutes later, Morton created a turnover in the neutral zone and fellow freshman Blake Hayward hit an unopposed Adams, who finished off the play for his fifth career goal, giving Union a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the second period.

The Black Knights finally found a way past Jake Kupsky in net, but it took a man-advantage situation to do so. Just 42 seconds into Army's first power play of the game, Dalton MacAfee scored to cut Union's lead to 3-1.

With three goals being score in the first seven minutes of the second period, both team's offensives quieted back down. That is until Cole Maier scored his second of the night at the 17:22 mark of the period. Maier got the puck along the half boards and walked in with an open lane to slip the puck past Dempsey for the Dutchmen's fourth goal.

The third period was more of a defensive battle. The Black Knights successfully killed off the bulk remainder of a five-minute penalty to start the period, but neither side would muster more than eight shots on net in the 20-minute frame.

Union returns home to Messa Rink for Homecoming and Family Weekend hosting Omaha for a two-game series, Oct. 12-13. Puck drop for both nights is slated for 7 p.m. (ET).
