SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Union College women's hockey team is set to close out the 2019 calendar year with a home series against Bemidji State University on December 13th and 14th at Messa Rink.
About the Dutchwomen (2-12-3, 2-4-1 ECAC):
- Union traveled last weekend, taking ECAC foes Saint Lawrence and #7 Clarkson in the North Country.
- Union tied the Saints with a 1-1 tally, before falling to the nationally-ranked Golden Knights in a 5-3 thriller in Potsdam.
- In the low-scoring tie in Canton, sophomore Maia Martinez scored the first goal of the game, and Saints forward Anna Segedi scored the game-tying goal shorthanded to tie it up.
- First-year goaltender Bella McKee made 32 saves in the tie game at Roos House.
- After a close match in Canton, the Dutchwomen opened up the scoring in the ECAC match at Clarkson with a goal from senior Megan Ryan. Ryan's goal in the first period, her second of the season, was shorthanded.
- After Clarkson's response to Ryan's goal, the Dutchwomen scored the first goal of the second period, this time on the power play. Senior Katelynn Russ got the rebound from classmate Rachel de Perio's shot and scored right in front. Ryan got her second point of the night with the secondary assist on the play.
- Clarkson scored four unanswered goals to add to their lead a guarantee them the home-ice win at Cheel Arena.
- De Perio added to the scoring with just two seconds remaining in the game, but it wasn't enough to get the win for Union. Classmate Ava Reynolds was credited with a secondary assist on the goal.
- McKee saved 38 saves in the close match to the nationally-ranked Golden Knights.
About the Beavers (9-8-1, 6-6-0 WCHA):
- The Beavers also played a conference opponent and hosted the St. Cloud State Huskies in Bemidji. The Beavers continued their six-game win streak with a 4-1 win on Friday and a 3-2 win on Saturday.
- Bemidji State is led in scoring by a pack of seniors. Kiki Radke leads the team in points (14) and assists (9). Haley Mack leads the team in goals (9) and sits second in points (13). The last senior, Abby Halluska, sits at third in points scored and third in assists on the season.
- Goaltending duties for the Beavers have mainly belonged to junior Lauren Bench, who has started 13 games this season. Junior Kerigan Dowhy has also seen action in four games, all of which are starts.
- Bemidji State is currently 4-4-0 on the road so far. The trip to Schenectady isn't their first trip to the Capital Region this season, as the Beavers took on the RPI Engineers earlier this season, winning the series with a combined score of 7-1 in Troy.
- With their 6-6-0 record in WCHA Conference play, the Beavers are fourth in the conference, behind powerhouses Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio State.
The Overall Series with Bemidji State:
- Friday's meeting between Union and Bemidji State is the 3rd all-time meeting between the two foes, with Union sitting at 0-2-0 historically.
- The two teams played for the first time in each other's history last year on January 4th and 5th in Bemidji, where Union lost both games by 3-0 and 6-2, respectively.
Milestone Watch:
- Senior Katelynn Russ scored the 50th point of her career against Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon, scoring the second goal of the game on a power play. Russ has played in 118 games for Union.
- Sophomore Grace Heiting played in her 50th career game at Clarkson. Classmate Katie Sonntag is set for her 50th career game in the first game of the Bemidji State series.
Sciba off to U-18 Worlds:
- Head Coach Josh Sciba was named an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team for a second consecutive season in April.
- Sciba will help to lead Team USA at the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship, set to take place in January 2020 in Bratislava, Slovakia.
- In 2019, Team USA earned a silver medal at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 World Championships, which took place in Obihiro, Japan.
Double the Hockey, Double the Fun:
- Friday's match-up with the Beavers is part of a Friday doubleheader to close out the 2019 calendar year at Messa Rink.
- The Dutchwomen will take on Bemidji State with a 3 p.m. puck drop, and the Union College men's hockey team will take on the Merrimack Warriors with a 7 p.m. puck drop directly after.
