BURLINGTON, Vt. -- In the nightcap of the Catamount Cup, the Union College men's hockey team fell to the host team Vermont, 2-0, on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Dutchmen got into penalty trouble early, having to kill off a five-minute major and a two-minute minor in the first period. Being shorthanded resulted in the Catamounts taking an 8-3 lead in shots during the first period. However, Union was able to keep the game scoreless through the first 40 minutes of play.
Unfortunately, Vermont's Ace Cowans scored in the fourth minute of the third period to break the stalemate. Unable to find anything past UVM goaltender Stefanos Lekkas, Union opted for an empty net in waning minutes of regulation, which resulted in the Catamounts taking a 2-0 lead before the final buzzer.
Summary
- Despite being out-shot 8-3 in the first period, Union ended up out-shooting Vermont 26-24 in the game.
- Neither team scored on the power play. Union went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, including a five-minute major, while Vermont went 4-for-4 on the PK.
- Darion Hanson made 22 saves in net for the Dutchmen. Stefanos Lekkas made 26 saves for the Catamounts.
