SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Cameron Klepper earned the "B" singles title to lead the Union College men's tennis team to a successful Dutchmen Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.
It was an all-Union final in the "B" singles bracket, with Klepper outdueling senior
Del Schunk, 6-3, 6-4, in the final match. Klepper defeated Oneonta's Alex Reiley, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round before outlasting Hamilton's Eric Stein in a supertiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, (10-7), to reach the finals. Schunk reached the finals with a pair of supertiebreaker wins, knocking off SLU's Eric Tecce 6-4, 2-6, (15-13) and Hamilton's Joe Reiner, 4-6, 6-2, (10-3).
In the "A" singles bracket, sophomore
Ioannis Binopoulos earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nathan Turtledove of St. Lawrence in the first round before falling to eventual champ Rob Dotterer of Hamilton in the semifinals.
The Dutchmen also took fifth and seventh place in the "D" singles bracket as well. Freshman
Ryan Dagan shook off a first-round loss to defeat a pair of Continentals in the backdraw and finish fifth, while classmate
Nate Bartlett also defeated a Hamilton player for seventh place.
Binopoulos and freshman
Aidan O'Brien took third place in the "A" doubles bracket, starting the weekend with an 8-5 win over Oneonta. Despite losing in the semifinals, the pair came back for an 8-4 win in the third-place match.
Klepper and classmate
Nick Weitzman also placed third in the "B" doubles bracket, posting an 8-2 win over Oneonta in the first round and then defeating a St. Lawrence tandem 8-5 in the third-place match.
Union will begin the dual match and Liberty League portions of its schedule on Friday, when the Dutchmen host Bard College at the Union Tennis Courts beginning at 4 p.m.
