Dutchmen dominate Owls in season opener

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. --
Scoring 35 points in the first 22 minutes of the game, the Union College football team cruised to a 42-7 victory over Westfield State to open the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Union (1-0) set an NCAA Div III record for most consecutive completed passes by multiple quarterbacks in the contest. Both William Bellamy and John Germinerio did not miss a pass all game and both finished 11-for-11 on the day, completing a total of 22 consecutive passes. The previous record was held by Kevin Keefe (16) and David Skarupa (4) of Baldwin Wallace on Sept. 10, 1994. The win also marks the second-straight year that head coach Jeff Behrman has started the season with a win.

Summary
  • Bellamy threw four touchdowns in the first half, connecting three times with Andre Ross Jr. and once with Griffin Beal.
  • Bellamy ended the game with 192 yards, while fellow QB Germinerio threw for 67 total yards.
  • Ike Irabor led Union with 108 rushing yards on 11 attempts, while Joseph Ferreira followed up with 81 yards and two touchdowns on 14 attempts.
  • Andre Ross Jr. finished the day with 125 yards receiving.
  • Union combined for a total of 533 yards of offense while limiting Westfield State to just 126 yards.
  • The Dutchmen held the Owls to three-and-outs on their first three possessions, while Union scored on its first three possessions.
  • Thomas Cavallo led the Dutchmen with six total tackles.
  • Vincent DiCaterino and Jimaar Edwards both recorded sacks for the Dutchmen.

How It Happened
Union wasted no time opening the scoring. After stopping Westfield State's opening drive, the Dutchmen need only three plays to drive 76 yards in less than a minute to get on the board. Bellamy's second pass of the day went for 58 yards to Ross Jr., as the sophomore wide out torched the secondary for an easy TD.

On Union's second possession, Irabor broke open for a game-long 26-yard rush which set up Ross Jr. for a short 10-yard touchdown from Bellamy. Union's second drive only needed five plays to find the back of the end zone as the Dutchmen went up 14-0 in the first five minutes of the game.

Beal added Union's third touchdown, capping off a 10-play, 49-yard drive with a four-yard pass from Bellamy with more than three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Starting off the second quarter, Bellamy linked up for a third time with Ross Jr. to put the Dutchmen up 28-0. Ross Jr.'s third TD of the day finished a four-play 73-yard drive.

With a commanding 28-0 lead, Germinerio took over behind center and Joseph Ferreira relieved Irabor of his duties in the backfield. Ferreira plowed in for his first career touchdown before the end of the half to put Union up 35-0. The sophomore running back added a second touchdown, rushing a game-high 14 yards to give the Dutchmen a 42-0 lead.

A fumble late in the game in Union territory resulted in Westfield State erasing the shutout bid with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the final score 42-7.

Up Next for the Dutchmen
Union hits the road to take on Anna Maria next Saturday, Sept. 7. Kick off in Paxton, Mass., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
