Men's Tennis Starts Season at St. Lawrence Invite

Complete Brackets

CANTON, N.Y. –
The Union College men's tennis team got the 2019-20 season started this weekend at the St. Lawrence Fall Classic, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Sammis Tennis Courts and Newell Field House.

Most of Saturday's action was held indoors due to rain in the North Country, while also postponing many of the backdraw matches. With time limited on Sunday's second day, eliminated players took part in exhibition matches to round out the day.

In the "A" singles flight, both senior Del Schunk and sophomore Ioannis Binopoulos dropped their first-round matches by the same 8-5 score.

All three Union entries advanced to the quarterfinals in the "B" singles flight, with freshmen Thomas McGuire and Aidan O'Brien as well as junior Austin Egna all emerging victorious in their first matches of the weekend. Egna and O'Brien followed that up with quarterfinal wins of their own on Saturday with Egna defeating Thomas Shung of Hobart by an 8-2 score and O'Brien besting RIT's Jack Wolicki, 8-4. Egna and O'Brien did not play each other on Sunday, with the junior earning the spot in the finals, where he fell to Rochester's Tanmay Thakkar, 6-3, 6-3.

Sophomore Jack Andre was Union's lone winner in the "C" singles flight as he defeated Ithaca's Jared Fields 8-1 in the first round before falling in the quarterfinals.

In "A" doubles bracket action, Binopoulos and O'Brien earned their first win together in the round of 16, defeating an RIT tandem, 8-5, before falling in the quarterfinals. Freshmen Nate Bartlett and Ryan Dagan did likewise in the "B" doubles bracket, posting their first win over players from the University of Rochester.

Union will return home to host its home invitational next weekend, as teams come to Schenectady for the Dutchmen Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.

Union College was my first choice among the many small liberal arts colleges I was planning to apply to. I first heard of the school from my teammate Zach Kaplan, who I knew from home. Once I went on my recruiting, visit I immediately fell in love with the school and all it had to offer.
