Frantic rally falls short at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a late push, the Union College men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Brown on Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Dutchmen (6-17-2, 4-9-1 ECACH) scored two extra-attacker goals within the final two minutes of the game, however, the Bears (4-15-0, 4-8-0 ECACH) were able to keep Union from forcing overtime.

The Bears started the contest looking to rebuke their 5-0 loss to the Dutchmen back in December. Brown out-shot Union, 13-5, in the first period and scored twice in the first seven minutes, making a statement early.

Brown scored a third goal midway through the second period, but the Dutchmen started to gain momentum as they ended up out-shooting the Bears, 6-5, in the frame.

As the third period wore on with neither team scoring, the Dutchmen went with an empty net with about three minutes remaining in regulation.

The extra pressure in the offensive zone paid off, as Liam Robertson scored to get union on the board at the 18-minute mark. Brandon Estes then added a second goal just 58 seconds later to cut Brown's lead to one.

Unfortunately, Union was unable to score a third goal in the final minute of play to force overtime, as Brown hung on for the 3-2 victory.

Summary
  • Defensemen Dylan Anhorn and Brandon Estes had a hand in both Union goals. Anhorn assisted on both, while Estes assisted on the first before scoring the second.
  • Union was scoreless through four power plays, while Brown score on one of its three power-play opportunities.
  • Despite the late push by Union, Brown out-shot the Dutchmen, 23-19.
  • Darion Hanson made 20 saves in net for the Dutchmen, while Gavin Nieto made 17 saves on the other end of the ice.
