Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union falls in shootout for Mayor's Cup

ALBANY, N.Y. -- For the second year in a row, the Capital District Mayor's Cup was decided in a shootout. However, this year Union was on the other end, as Rensselaer won the shootout, 2-0, in four rounds to claim the Eighth Annual Mayor's Cup. The game officially ended in a 1-1 tie, after neither team could find the back of the net in the five-minute overtime.

Just as in every other Mayor's Cup match, Union and RPI played a closely contested game. Both goals came in the second period and were scored barely more than a minute apart from each other. Darion Hanson made 30 saves in the contest, including two in overtime to keep the Dutchmen tied with the Engineers. On the other side of the ice, Owen Savory made 26 saves for RPI.

In the shootout to decide the winner of the Mayor's Cup, both goalies stopped the first round of shooters, but RPI scored on it's second and third attempts, while Savory stopped the rest of the Union shooters to secure the team's third Mayor's Cup win.

Summary
  • Taylor Brierley scored his first goal of the season at the 16:08 mark of the second period to open the scoring.
  • RPI scored one minute and 11 seconds later to tie the game back up.
  • Union was unable to convert on the man advantage, going 0-for-2 on the power play, while RPI's went 1-for-4 on the PP.
  • The shootout loss breaks a three-year streak in which the Mayor's Cup had remained in Schenectady.
