SCHENECTADY, N.Y.— The Union College women's hockey team will host their final game in January, and welcome ECAC opponent St. Lawrence to Messa Rink on Tuesday.
About the Dutchwomen:
- Union swept another ECAC opponent, claiming two victories over RPI by a combined score of 7-1.
- Friday's game proved to be a fantastic offensive effort by the Dutchwomen, with five different players grabbing a goal to solidify the fourth win of the season for Union. Sophomore Katie Sonntag opened the game scoring in the first, while seniors Katelynn Russ and Rachel de Perio followed suit in the second period. Sophomore Grace Heiting and junior Helen Markovic sealed the deal in the third, capping Union's best offensive effort since the 2017-18 season.
- Union's 42 shots on goal were the most in a game for the Dutchwomen, since November 11, 2018.
- The Dutchwomen stayed in the Capital Region on Saturday but traveled to the Times Union Center to take on rival RPI once again, in the third annual Mayors' Cup game.
- After a scoreless two periods on both sides, Union scored twice in the final five minutes, with goals from Heiting and first-year forward Carmen Merlo.
- Union outshot the Engineers 36-16, and first-year goaltender Bella McKee claimed her first career shutout to bring the Mayors' Cup trophy home for the first time in Union history. McKee's shutout was the first shutout victory for Union since junior Coco Francis had a shutout over Merrimack in 2017.
- With Union's two wins on the weekend, the Dutchwomen currently have sole possession of seventh place in ECAC Hockey with a conference record of 5-7-3. Union is currently ahead of Quinnipiac, St. Lawrence, Dartmouth, Brown, and RPI.
About the Saints:
- The Saints spent the weekend at their home rink and hosted Harvard and Dartmouth. Saint Lawrence split the weekend, falling 2-1 against Harvard, and later grabbed a huge 5-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday.
- Saint Lawrence's offense has an evenly-spaced push. Kayla Vespa (11-15-26) holds the team lead in points, goals, and assists. Behind Vespa on the leaderboard is first-year Anna Segedi, with 11 goals and 21 points in her rookie campaign for the Saints. Alongside them is Shailynn Snow with 16 points on the year, and Julia Gosling, who grabbed a hat-trick in the Saints win over Dartmouth on January 25. Gosling's offensive effort against the Big Green awarded her with the ECAC Rookie of the Week.
- Freshman Lucy Morgan has handled the goaltending responsibilities this season, starting 18 games for the Saints. Morgan has earned a 6-7-5 record, 1.50 GAA, with a save percentage of .941.
- Saint Lawrence is currently 5-7-2 on the road so far. The matchup between the two teams is the second on the season, as the two teams tied in December with a 1-1 tally.
- With their 5-6-2 record in ECAC Conference play, the Saints are tied for 8th in the conference.
The Series with Saint Lawrence:
- Tuesday's meeting between Union and Saint Lawrence is the 34th all-time meeting between the two conference foes, with Union sitting at 0-30-3 historically.
- The two teams last played each other in December, where the teams finished in a 1-1 tie. The lone Union goal in the game came from sophomore Maia Martinez.
- The two squads first met on March 6, 2004, at Saint Lawrence, which ended in a 13-0 Saints victory.
A Golden Year:
- During winter break, head coach Josh Sciba traveled to Bratislava, Slovakia, as the assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team, for the second consecutive season.
- Team USA earned a gold medal in Slovakia, after earning an overtime win over Canada on January 2. This marks the second U18 world medal for Sciba, as Team USA earned a silver medal in 2019.
Rewriting the Record Books:
- With her goal in Friday's game versus RPI, senior Katelynn Russ remains fifth all-time in Union's history for points (54) and third in the Division I era. With two more points, she move into a tie for fourth all-time with Christine Valente '15.
- Ahead of Russ on the all-time points list is Courtney Ripenhoff '05 with 61 points for third all-time, Elizabeth Flanagan '03 with 64 points for second all-time, and Elise Nichols '07 with 68 points for the program lead in points. Of those three, Nichols is the only Dutchwoman to record all her points as a Division I player.
- Russ is also climbing up the leaderboard for career goals as well. She currently has the sole-possession of third all-time in goals with 32. She trails Ripenhoff with 35 goals and Nichols with 43 career tallies.
- With her assist on Friday, senior Cheyenne Harris now has sole possession of third all-time in the Union record books for assists (34) and sits just two away from tying the program-record of 36 set by Valente. Classmate Rachel de Perio also has cracked the top 10 and sits tied for sixth for assists (26).
- With her two straight wins and her first career shutout, first-year goaltender Bella McKee now sits at eighth all-time in Union history for career wins (6).
Sweep, Sweep Victory:
- With Saturday's win over RPI, the Union College Dutchwomen swept the Engineers for the first time in team history and secured the Mayors' Cup trophy for the first time.
- During the weekend, the Dutchwomen outshot the Engineers by a 78-34 margin and scored seven goals. Union's five-goal performance was the highest amount of goals scored in a game for the Dutchwomen since a 6-3 win over Brown on October 27, 2017.
