WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Union College coach and administrator Sheila Weaver was recognized by the District of Columbia State Athletic Association as a 2020 inductee into the DCSAA High School Hall of Fame, the association announced on Wednesday.
Weaver was instrumental in getting women's athletics off the ground at Union College in the mid-1970s, serving as the college's first Coordinator of Women's Athletics and one of the first to be in such a role in the entire country. She was the first varsity coach for three different programs at Union, leading the women's tennis, softball and women's volleyball teams to the first victories in their respective histories.
Weaver left Union to become the head women's volleyball coach at the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., where she coached and taught for nearly 30 years, and later returned to the collegiate level at the University of The District of Columbia. In addition, she founded The Academic and Athletic Alliance, a non-profit that works with coaches and administrators in a variety of sports across the country.
Weaver is one of 10 inductees into the Hall of Fame's fourth class, along with luminaries such as Super Bowl champion quarterback Byron Leftwich and legendary college basketball coach John Thompson, Jr.
