TROY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-0 Saturday night at Houston Field House.
In the least penalized game this season, Union went 0-for-3 on the powerplay and prevented Rensselaer from scoring on their only power-play opportunity.
Both teams put together a strong defensive effort in the start as the Dutchmen and the Engineers combined for only five shots on goal in the first period, with Rensselaer holding a 4-1 edge.
Union came out of the locker room for the second period firing pucks on net, but it was Rensselaer who struck first with a goal off the stick of Shane Sellar. The stick of junior goalie
Connor Murphy got tangled up in a surge of players and ended up behind the net, and Sellar capitalized by beating Murphy glove side.
The Engineers added to their lead with a goal from Zach Dubinsky at 8:19 of the third period before adding an empty net goal at 19:12 to seal the victory.
Sophomore
Ville Immonen was excellent on the faceoff, winning eight of nine faceoffs he took. Sophomore
Nic Petruolo and first-year
Cullen Ferguson combined for four of seven Dutchmen blocked shots.
Murphy finished the night with 21 saves in the loss, falling to 1-5-1 on the season. Linden Marshall stopped 15 shots in the win for his second career shutout.
Union hosts a pair of home games next weekend, starting with Clarkson on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
