SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year
Collin Graf scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in overtime to give the Union College men's hockey team a 4-3 victory over Clarkson University Friday night at Messa Rink.
After junior
Connor Murphy made a great save on a one-on-one opportunity, senior
Brandon Estes scooped the rebound up in the corner and banked it up the boards to Graf, who fired the puck from the slot, giving the Dutchmen the 4-3 victory.
First-year
Michael Hodge (1-1-2) and sophomore
Tyler Watkins (0-2-2) each scored two points in the win. Junior
Gabriel Seger and sophomore
Liam Robertson both added goals, while
Cullen Ferguson,
Chaz Smedsrud, and
Bram Scheerer all registered assists.
Union had arguably its best period of the season to start the game, scoring three goals and outshooting Clarkson 15-5 in the opening frame. Robertson opened the scoring at 9:39 with a power-play goal. Ferguson threw the puck in front and Robertson's initial shot was saved, but he kept with it and buried the rebound to put Union up 1-0.
Seger added to Union's lead with his first goal of the year less than three minutes later. Sophomore
Nic Petruolo forced a turnover in the defensive end, and Union came back the other way. Scheerer found Watkins on the wing, and the sophomore found Seger by the back post for the redirection.
Hodge scored his fourth of the year on the powerplay when Smedsrud delivered a no-look pass into the slot for a wide-open Hodge, who one-timed it past Ethan Haider.
Clarkson scored three unanswered – one in each period – to force the game into overtime. The Golden Knights scored in the final 30 seconds in the first period, giving Clarkson momentum heading into the second frame. The visitors out shot Union 24-12 in the second and third periods.
Murphy had a big game for Union making 29 stops in the win, including a penalty shot by Ayrton Martino at 1:26 of overtime. The junior improves to 2-5-1 on the season with the win.
Union registered a season-high 28 shots on goal. The Dutchmen were out shot by the visiting Golden Knights 32-28.
The Dutchmen were 2-for-3 on the powerplay, while Clarkson went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Dutchmen are back in action tomorrow as they host ECAC Hockey opponent St. Lawrence. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
