Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The high-powered offense of #12/13 Cornell University proved to be too much for the visiting Dutchmen as Union dropped a 4-1 decision Friday night at Lynah Rink.
Senior
Brandon Estes was the lone goal scorer for the Dutchmen, netting his third goal of the season and team-leading ninth point during the third period. Junior
Matt Allen and sophomore
Tyler Watkins registered assists on the goal.
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kyle Penney scored on a rebound at 3:31 to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead and Ondrej Psenicka added to the score less than eight minutes later, shooting the puck just under junior
Connor Murphy's glove.
The Big Red made it 3-0 in the second period with a short shot off the stick of Jack Malone to beat Murphy glove side.
After Cornell drew their third interference penalty of the night only nine seconds into the third period, Estes cut into Cornell's lead with a power-play goal. Watkins gained possession of the puck in the corner of the offensive zone before sending the puck behind the net to Allen. The junior chipped it to Estes just shy of the blue line who one-timed it through traffic to cut into Cornell's lead 1:25 into the third frame.
Cornell answered 10:20 later when Travis Mitchell scored on a two-on-one opportunity to give the Big Red a 4-1 lead.
The Dutchmen went 1-for-4 on the powerplay and were perfect on the lone penalty kill opportunity. Both teams were even on shots on goal, registering 22, and even in faceoffs, winning 30 each.
Murphy stopped 18 shots in the loss while Joe Howe made 21 saves for Cornell.
Union travels to Hamilton tomorrow for a 4 p.m. puck drop against Colgate at the Class of 1965 Arena.
