Seger's Late Goal Earns Tie Versus Saints

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – For the second night in a row, the Union men's hockey team went to overtime, tying St. Lawrence University 2-2 at Messa Rink on Saturday night.

With the tie, Union moves to 1-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play and 2-6-2 overall while St. Lawrence sits at 1-0-1 in conference play and 2-2-3 overall. The Saints won the shootout 1-0 in four rounds to earn the second point.

First-year Andrew Seaman scored his first collegiate goal and junior Gabriel Seger scored his second of the weekend for the Dutchmen, while senior Brandon Estes and sophomores Liam Robertson, Chaz Smedsrud, and Nic Petruolo all earned points in the tie.

Seaman opened the scoring at 17:15 of the first period. After Union forced a turnover in the defensive zone, Robertson gained possession and took the puck up ice before passing it to Smedsrud near the left-wing wall. Smedsrud sent it back to a wide-open Seaman in the slot, who fired the puck into traffic, where it bounced off a defender and in.

The Saints tied the game at one only 11 seconds into the second period on an Aleksi Peltonen goal, giving St. Lawrence momentum in the second frame. St. Lawrence outscored Union in shots on goal 12-6.

Junior Connor Murphy was pulled due to injury four minutes into the third stanza and classmate Garrett Nieto entered the game in relief. Only 47 seconds later, the Saints scored the go-ahead goal off the stick of Tim Makowski.

Union flipped a switch after the St. Lawrence goal, allowing only one shot on goal and outshooting the Saints 11-1 for the remainder of the period. Seger scored at 18:49 of the third period to tie the game at two. After pulling Nieto for an extra skater, Petruolo gained possession at the top of the left-wing circle before sending a cross ice pass to Estes. The senior passed the puck to Seger, who picked the corner on a difficult angle from the bottom of the right-wing circle to tie the game.

Both teams traded scoring chances in the overtime period, but neither could convert. St. Lawrence's Kaden Pickering scored the only goal in a four-round shootout to give St. Lawrence the win and extra ECAC Hockey point.

Murphy finished the game with 44:00 minutes of ice time and 21 saves. Nieto entered the game in relief, logging 20:29 minutes of ice time. Nieto allowed one goal and made four stops, including a highlight reel glove save at the final buzzer of overtime to bring on the shootout.

Union travels to Ithaca on Friday for a game against Cornell University at Lynah Rink. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
