Robertson's OT Goal Lifts Union Over Princeton

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – After more than 62 minutes of scoreless hockey, sophomore Liam Robertson was the overtime hero, scoring the game winner at 2:26 remaining to propel the Union College men's hockey team to a 1-0 win over the Princeton Tigers Friday night at Messa Rink.

In overtime, sophomore Chaz Smedsrud forced a turnover in the offensive zone, poking the puck free from a Princeton defender and putting in on the stick of Robertson, who sent it bar down glove side to give the Dutchmen the victory.

In the win, Union improves to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in ECAC Hockey play. The Dutchmen have won their last three games, including a pair of shutouts by junior Connor Murphy.
Robertson now has three goals in his last two games and moves into a three-way tie for the team lead with nine points.

Murphy was excellent in net, stopping all 34 shots for his second shutout in a Dutchman sweater and fourth career shutout. In both of Murphy's shutouts this season, the junior has turned aside 34 shots.

After a first period that saw both teams generate nine shots on goal, the Dutchmen got their first power-play opportunity of the night in the second period. The Tigers took a man advantage opportunity into the third period, but couldn't convert.

Union went on the power-play early into the third period, but only managed one shot. Princeton had their best scoring opportunity of the night after Murphy was called for tripping, putting five pucks on net, all of which were turned aside.

After sophomore Tyler Watkins was called for high sticking with only 2:09 to play, Princeton tried to generate some offense, but Murphy and the defense prevented the Tigers from registering a shot.

The Dutchmen will be back in action tomorrow night when they host #4 Quinnipiac in the final ECAC Hockey contest of the calendar year. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
