SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association both as a team and individually for achieving in the classroom this season, as the squad was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the third year in a row and a program-record seven Dutchmen earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
The Dutchmen made it three years in a row of great work in the classroom, posting a team GPA of 3.571 for the 2020-21 school year. The award is given to any ITA program with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher on a 4.00 scale, with all varsity letter winners contributing to the team GPA. The men's team easily surpassed that standard to achieve one of the top marks among all of Union's varsity sports.
Individually, Union boasted seven student-athletes named ITA Scholar-Athletes, recognizing varsity letter winners with a GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale for the current academic year. Seniors
Austin Egna and
Max Egna, junior
Cameron Klepper and sophomore
Aidan O'Brien all earned the honor for the second straight year, while senior
David Bond, junior
Ioannis Binopoulos and first-year
Khai Ton were recognized for the first time in their careers.
The seven selections are the most in a season in recent program history, surpassing the previous standard of five set last year.
The men's team posted a 2-5 record and a 2-4 Liberty League mark during the abbreviated spring season, with all four conference losses coming to conference tournament qualifiers.
