SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Nick Weitzman took home the "D" Singles title to lead the Union College men's tennis team to a successful weekend at the Dutchmen Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.
Union had an excellent weekend on the courts, reaching the finals in all four singles brackets and one of the two doubles brackets as well.
After earning two wins yesterday, Weitzman defeated Trinity's Pierce Rutledge in Sunday's final by a 6-4, 6-2 score to earn the title. Weitzman nearly earned a second title as well on the weekend, as he and junior
Aidan O'Brien advanced to the "A" doubles final with an 8-2 semifinal victory before falling to Henry Bilicic and Richard Fisher of Trinity, 8-4, in the final.
O'Brien nearly took home the "A" singles title as well, as the junior took Bilicic to a supertiebreaker before falling by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 score. First-year
Ben Jacobs came up just short in a supertiebreaker in his "B" singles final, falling to St. Lawrence's Adam Heilbronner, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.
Union also captured third in the "D" singles bracket as well, as first-year
Austin Gregory defeated St. Lawrence's John Hill-Edgar, 8-2.
Junior
Thomas McGuire also had a good day on Sunday, winning a pair of backdraw matches against Oneonta's Kevin Acker (8-1) and Trinity's John Ginter (8-4) to take fifth place.
Union will play its first dual match and first Liberty League match of the year on Wednesday, when the Dutchmen host Bard College beginning at 4 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
