UTICA, N.Y. - The Union College women's track and field team kicked off the 2022 portion of the indoor season on Saturday afternoon, competing against Division I, II and III competition at the Utica Winter Opener. The Dutchwomen finished 11th out of 16 teams with 31 points.

Sophomore
Allison Malatesta had the best result of the day for the Dutchwomen, beating 15 other runners to take first in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:21.27. Union earned 13 points in the event, with Malatesta joined in the scoring column by first-year
Caroline Kelly, who placed sixth in 3:42.70.

Classmate
Caroline Stanton had a pair of good showings on the afternoon in the dashes. She placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time 1:03.47 to qualify for the Liberty League Championships and also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash, clocking in with a time of 28.13.

First-year
Marley Froe finished 11th in the 60m dash with a time of 8.56 and ran a 28.33 for 10th place in the 200m. Â

Senior
Steph Heiberger placed fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 10.63 seconds, shaving more than three-tenths of a second off of her 10.94 time in the preliminaries.

Union also earned a combined eight points in the relays, thanks to a pair of fifth-place finishes. The 4x200 relay team of Froe, Heiberger, and first-years
Gabby Baker and
Yurami Van Eer finished in a time of 2:04.78, while the 4x400 team of Malatesta, first-year
Catherine Dacey, and sophomores
Alix Barry and
Gabby Gavala clocked in at 4:36.48.
The Dutchwomen will compete next Saturday at the Middlebury Snowflake Open beginning at 11 a.m.
