WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team tied Army West Point, 2-2, Sunday evening at Tate Rink.
Union won a six-round shootout off the stick of first-year
Nate Hanley, but the game will go down as a tie.
Hanley scored his first collegiate goal at 5:55 of the opening frame senior
Owen Farris tallied his first point of the season in the third off of a breakaway. First-years
Cal Mell and
Josh Nixon both added assists on Hanley's goal.
The Dutchmen went a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Union opened the scoring 5:55 into the first period. Hanley redirected a backhanded shot from classmate
Cal Mell into the net to give Union a 1-0 lead. Union went on a five-minute powerplay after Zach Wilson was awarded a game misconduct. The Dutchmen had several good chances to score, but Gavin Abric held on to preserve the one-goal game.
The Black Knights found the equalizer at 16:56 of the second period. Sophomore Joey Baez redirected a shot from teammate Sean Vlasich.
Tied going into the third period, it was the home team that broke the stalemate. Seconds after Union successfully killed a penalty, Michael Sacco took advantage of some confusion in front of the net and sniped one past Murphy's left side. Union responded 5:15 later when Farris gained possession in the Union defensive end and took it up the ice on a breakaway. The initial shot was blocked, but Farris scooped up his own rebound and buried it past Abric.
Going into overtime, it was Murphy who kept the game scoreless as the senior made four massive stops in the extra frame to keep the game tied.
Murphy made 30 stops as part of a 52 save weekend while Abric saved 21 shots.
Union will travel to Hartford on Friday for a pair of games against the University of Connecticut. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the XL Center.
