Union Falls to #20 UConn

HARFTFORD, Conn. – The Union College men's hockey team (1-1-1, 0-0-0 ECACH) fell 4-1 Friday night to #20 University of Connecticut at the XL Center.

Union was once again perfect on the penalty kill, going 5-for-5 on the night.

First-year Nick Young scored his first collegiate goal at 12:14 of the second period. Classmate Kyle Chauvette made his collegiate debut in relief at 4:10 of the third period.

Both teams combined for a total of five penalties in the opening frame. Ryan Tverberg took the puck up the ice and attempted a wraparound shot from behind the net that bounched off of Murphy's right pad. The puck landed right on the stick of Hudson Schandor, who flipped it home to give UConn a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead at 10:41 of the second period. Bradley sent a wrister from the just outside the left circle and Nick Capone redirected the puck into the net. Union was quick to respond with a goal 1:33 later. Young intercepted a pass going up the wall and sent a one-timer from the blue line that beat Logan Terness. UConn extended the lead back to two goals after Jake Percival intercepted a pass up the middle and found the back of the net.

Trailing 3-1 going into the third period, Chauvette entered the game as Union was going on the penalty kill, making a few big stops right away to keep it a two-goal game. With 3:07 remaining, Union called their timeout and pulled Chauvette for the extra attacker. Chase Bradley added the empty-netter with 1:44 remaining to make it a 4-1 win for the Huskies.

Murphy made 22 saves in 44:10 minutes of work to take the loss for Union. Chauvette made 11 stops in 14:27 minutes of relief. Terness moves to 2-0 on the season with 15 saves in the win.

Union looks to split the series with the Huskies Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the XL Center.
